Pakistan intends to set aside over Rs. 7.302 trillion for debt servicing in the upcoming fiscal year 2023–2024, which comprises interest payments and principal repayments.
This sum represents 50.5% of the entire budgetary expenditure of Rs. 14.460 trillion. Initially set at Rs. 3.950 trillion, the budget for debt servicing in the current fiscal year has since been amended to Rs. 5.520 trillion.
For the purpose of servicing foreign debt, Rs. 872.219 billion would be allocated in 2023–24, as opposed to Rs. 510.972 billion in the current fiscal year (updated to Rs. 725.370 billion). As opposed to this, it is anticipated that domestic debt servicing will cost Rs. 6.430 trillion in 2023–24 as opposed to Rs. 3.439 trillion in 2022–23 (updated to Rs. 4.795 trillion).
Pakistan’s total public debt as of March 2023 was Rs 59,247 billion, up Rs 10,005 billion over the first nine months of the current fiscal year.
